So I meant to put this up a while ago. Couchsurfing.com is an organization with almost 50,000 members (located in the picture to the right) that links up travellers to couches all over the world. It's a great way to meet new people, fellow backpackers, in various countries, who will host you for a couple of nights. The best part is: the couch is free!
I know, it brings up some trust and safety issues. But the online profiles allow you to put information about yourself and review information about others. If somebody is a creep, people will note it. And there is no binding contract, so you can always skip out to a hostel if you feel unsafe.
I've hosted couchsurfers a number of times and nobody has turned out crazy. You get a lot of great stories, as well. It's a really great organization, and it's hitting major newspapers all over the world: check it out.
